What Causes Clicking Noise When Changing Gears?

As a car owner, the only thing that makes me unhappy is the unwanted and weird noise from the car. When gears work, at high speed the noise and vibration caused by a rotation of the gears are considered a very big problem. However, there can be many reasons for it. And, every different noise from the car states the condition of your car. Here we have taken the clicking noise when changing gears into consideration.

Why The Car Makes Clicking Noise When Changing Gears?

Given below are some causes of car gear making a clicking noise. We all know that the gear has four levels that are P, R, N, D. So Clicking sound is produced when these levels are changed. The causes for it are as follows.

1. Free Play In The Parking Lock Mechanism

If while parking the car, the lever was shifted to P, and also if the parking road is inclined it might roll off a few centimeters before the parking lock takes effect. Under these conditions, there are chances of clicking sound to be produced when you shift the lever out of P as the lock is released. Whenever you change the gears, you will hear a clicking sound.

2. Gearbox Bearings Are Becoming Worn

If you listen to the clicking sound whenever you change the gears then it is an indication that the gears and parts of the clutch are loose or tending to damage. Also, it may be because the gearbox’s bearings are becoming worn and that you will need to replace them. Abrupt and heavy clicking sound when changing gear may have worn out clutch may be damaged. The harsh the sound, the looser the parts, and the heavy risk of damage.

3. Motor Mounts And Transmission Mounts

Motor and Transmission mounts provide contact between the mounts and the vehicle’s frame. As the vehicle ages, these cushions can shrink becomes brittle, also falls even fall off place. All these conditions will lead to clicking noises as your vehicle is put into gear. If this situation is caught and corrected soon enough, you can minimize damage to your vehicle and avoid costly repairs.

4. Problem In The Clutch

Noise from the gears indicates that the transmission parts are hitting together abnormally which is not normal as such. A gear should make a very small sound that can be easily avoided when changed and operated properly. Your clutch has a problem if there is a clicking noise under the vehicle when you change gears.

5. Low Transmission Fluid

This is a very common reason for the clicking noise from the gears because it lacks lubrication thereby causing inefficiency in the transmission gears. Check the transmission fluids when the engine is hot. Low or too old transmission fluids will not provide proper lubrication and cooling for the various components and will lead to hard shifting and clicking noises. You will be able to know if the lubrication is too old by checking and giving attention to its color. The fluid color is red or dark pink. If the fluid is of brown or black color then it is old, burned, or contaminated.

How To Fix The Clicking Noise When Changing Gears?

So earlier we have discussed the reasons for the clicking noise when changing gears. Now We will suggest the tips for fixing the clicking of the gear.

1. Use The Gear Properly

Do not lift the gear too quickly or with great force. When changing it, punch the gear down, move the gear stick into the required gear gently. Also, the transmission should be gentle and you should be able to drive it without any effort. It is often under hard acceleration and fast gear changes when a driver grabs the wrong gear or misses the gear, making an awful noise, damaging the car.

2. Use A Suitable Lubrication

If you suspect a clicking noise, do not forget to check the fluid level. Often, a small clicking sound can be the starting or an indication of something wrong in the gear. It can be because of the low fluid level. This sound may turn into a whining sound when the gear’s teeth wear accelerates because of lack of lubrication. Lubricate gears sufficiently to keep the lubricant film on the surface, under hydrodynamic lubrication. High viscosity lubricant will tend to reduce the noise.

3. Teeth

Your engine and your gear will tend to make noise all the time. But some new noise that was not there yesterday will come into existence today. Clicking sound might indicate a broken tooth on a gear, a set of broken teeth, the gear itself will is not broken so it will not make noise but the clicks will be audible. So, you should adopt gears with smaller modules and a large number of gear teeth. Proper tooth profile modification is also effective.

Is It Okay To Use The Gears With The Clicking Sound?

Since the car is made up of many complex machines, many times the noise we hear from the machines is due to friction. Also when the gear is new, it is tightly held by the joints with time the joints also get loose and the noise is minimized. But when you start hearing odd noises coming from your vehicle now and then it is always safer and less costly to get them checked out sooner rather than later. If you have any issues you can also directly contact the technician.

Conclusion

A clicking sound could be caused by any number of reasons, such as a low level of oil or loose components as discussed above in detail. However, this is somewhat normal to an extent.  But t is suggested that if you find anything weird in your car, fix it yourself or take it to the technician. This will save your repairing charges as well as efforts. Go through the article properly and fix your car’s issues if any. If the organs of your car are healthy, then only your car is fit.
